"Here Health and Social Pleasures reign,
Here Polished ease with freedom dwells;
No new nor ancient fount shall gain
A greater fame than Tunbridge Wells.
"

This description of Royal Tunbridge Wells, written by the poet John Byron, is as fitting today as it was back in 1723.

This tranquil spa town owes its existence to Lord North, who, in 1606, discovered the healing waters bubbling from a spring in the hillside.

The Pantiles are the old and original part of Royal Tunbridge Wells. It is here that Lord North's medicinal waters can still be sampled and where the ancient colonnaded buildings reflect the style and tranquillity of the old town.
